Tips on getting Ubuntu on a Dell XPS machine

Yay, I got a laptop! Sadly, it comes with Windows 8. I created a bootable USB drive, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to boot from the drive. After playing around with the BIOS settings, I was able to figure out how.

  1. Open BIOS. Do this by turning on the computer and immediately repeatedly taping F2.
  2. Add USB drives to the boot order. Use right arrow to get to the "Boot" section. Then, add a new device and name it "usb". Move down by pressing tab. Select in the next section the entry that contains "usb". Press tab until you get to yes. Press enter. Select usb in the menu and press +. Save and quit with the instructions provided onscreen.
  3. Boot from the USB drive. Shutdown the computer. Plug the USB drive into the computer. Turn computer on.
  4. Install Ubuntu. Proceed as you usually do when you install Ubuntu.
Note: You may need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS if you install Ubuntu alongside Windows and can't boot to Windows.
